ON TREND NURSERY IN RADIANT ORCHID, PANTONE’S COLOR OF 2014

While in the midst of implementing a nursery design for my East Lake clients, Pantone (the world’s authority on color trends) announced Radiant Orchid as their 2014 Color of the Year. Pantone Institute’s Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman describes this color as “an enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, [it] inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.” How fitting for Baby K’s nursery!

Her mother had already requested this most charming shade of purple which was a far cry from what we started with. The room was previously used as a home office, then later as a den as shown below.

The pillow below was the inspiration for this design. It has a sophisticated, yet playful ikat pattern with a great texture. The orange accent would be just enough to modernize the color palette and add just the right amount of zing!  EastLakeNursery_ErikaWardInteriors_1

We layered the existing blinds with a fully operable custom roman shade with purple trim. With the blinds closed and shade lowered, Baby K can nap in complete darkness no matter the time of day. EastLakeNursery_ErikaWardInteriors_3

I also designed an adjustable coordinating crib skirt. The skirt is actually composed of four separate pieces that can be lifted or lowered based on the desired height of the mattress. EastLakeNursery_ErikaWardInteriors_4

Here’s a closer shot of the bedskirt.

When sourcing a glider, I remembered this newly upholstered chair my designer friend Dayka had for sale and purchased it for a song! With the awesome deal we got from Dayka, there’s room left to have the upholsterer add a gliding mechanism to the chair whenever Baby K’s Mommy is ready. These three items are the only custom elements in the room, but you get miles of style from all pieces.

In this cozy nook, we introduced a teal accent lamp with scalloped shade and inexpensive wall art. I used the parents’ baby photos in combination with free printable art I found online. How lucky!

Opposite the purple chair is this Eames-inspired rocker that can accommodate an extra guest for Baby K!

Opposite the seating area is the changing and dressing area. I purchased these wall lamps from Home Depot and added the pleated trim for a touch of sweetness. Accent lighting in the changing area gives Mom and Dad a touch of light for late nights when Baby K’s diaper needs a little attention. EastLakeNursery_ErikaWardInteriors_9

The hooks to the left of the dresser holds her adorable little outfits. A young fashionista has to be prepared to step out looking her best. We also replaced the top row of knobs with these ceramic ones with purple polka dot accents! Almost anything can be customized to truly make it your own! EastLakeNursery_ErikaWardInteriors_7

Many thanks to my East Lake clients for allowing me to make their nursery a warm, stylish place for their pampered princess. Sweet dreams Baby K!
