TOP 5 BATH TRENDS FOR 2012

Looking to renovate your bathroom this year? Before you swing the hammer, read this quick update on my favorite bath trends of 2012. Many of the trends you are about to see are consumer favorites from previous years, others are based on updates in latest technology and resource conservation. Incorporate all or just one of these trends, you can’t go wrong. Let’s take a look.

WATERSENSE

When shopping for showerheads, faucets, and toilets look for the WaterSense® product seal. In 2006, the Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) created this special certification to encourage efficient use of water resources protect the future of our nation’s water supply. WaterSense labeled products use about 20% less water and perform as well or better than their less efficient counterparts.  Thankfully, more and more brands are partnering with E.P.A. each year.

GLASS ENCLOSURES

There’s nothing sexier in a bathroom than a glass enclosure. Easy to clean with a simple squeegee, glass enclosures create an open feel (even in the smallest bath) and also provides functionality to the space.

FLOATING VANITIES

A floating vanity adds a modern twist to the most outdated bath. It provides an illusion of space and emphasizes the clean, clutter-free design of a contemporary bath.

RE-PURPOSED FURNITURE AS VANITIES

I wrote about this trend last year and it continues to gain momentum in 2012. Retrofitting antique furniture for use as a vanity is definitely a greener option than purchasing brand new. Not only does it add a feeling of warmth to your bath, it provides a custom element to your big (or small) renovation.

NATURAL ELEMENTS

Nothing exudes serenity more than elements found in nature. This bamboo basin bring the outdoors in with its varied wood tones and maintenance free finish. Teak and stone also returns as a high demand material for baths. Formerly found in high-end baths, you can now find vessels like these in retail outlets, too.

Any suggestions for updating a bathroom that has the ‘gold package’ from the 90s —> without breaking the bank and calling in the calvary? I would like to try my hand at a DIY project.

Until you are ready to call in the plumber, what you CAN do is merge your existing fixtures with current trends. Brass is regaining popularity. If possible, you can replace your existing mirror with one framed in brass/gold. The idea it to make your fixtures look intentional instead of outdated. Paint or wallpaper, new towel bars, and bath towels will quickly bring your bath into the 21th century. Hope this helps!
